Fire Fighting Boats 2nd Edition 2025 Rule Book

The complete professional guide for the Fire Fighting Boats Competition. All rules, scoring, and specifications in one place.

A Dynamic Robotics Challenge

The Firefighting Boats Competition simulates a marine firefighting and rescue mission, challenging teams to design, build, and operate a robotic boat to navigate hazards, rescue items, and extinguish a fire with precision and speed. This edition enhances the complexity, blending mechanical, electronic, and control system engineering to solve real-world maritime safety problems.

Procedures

  • Registration: Academies can register one or more teams of 3-5 members. Individual teams not affiliated with an academy are also welcome to register. Academy-registered teams must have a dedicated supervisor present.
  • Testing: Teams get access to a testing arena after inspection. A 5-minute calibration period is provided before each official trial.
  • Inspection: Verifies all constraints and team knowledge. An official ID sticker is applied, which is mandatory for competition. No coaches allowed.

General Robot Specifications

These core rules apply to all robots across all categories. Adherence is mandatory and will be verified during inspection.

⚖️ Weight Constraints

Maximum robot weight is 3kg, including all components, batteries, and any onboard water at the start of the trial.

📏 Size Constraints

Maximum dimensions are 25cm (L) x 25cm (W) x 10cm (submerged depth). The water hose must not exceed 5cm in length.

🔥 Firefighting Constraints

The flame must be extinguished using water only. Any other method (e.g., air blowers) is strictly prohibited and results in round disqualification.

Safety Specifications

Safety is paramount. All teams must strictly adhere to these regulations. Violations will be penalized and may lead to disqualification.

💧 Water Safety

  • Eco-friendly Materials: All materials must be non-toxic and must not leave debris in the pool.
  • Perimeter Safety: Team members must remain behind designated safety lines. Only authorized members may handle boats at the water's edge.
  • Equipment Rescue: Retrieval of a malfunctioning boat is handled exclusively by on-site organizers.

⚡ Electrical Safety

  • Battery Handling: Maximum 12V power systems. All batteries must be securely mounted and sealed from water exposure.
  • Wiring and Insulation: All electrical connections must be properly insulated and waterproofed.
  • Circuit Protection: Systems must include appropriate fuses or current-limiting components.
  • Component Safety: All electronics must be secure, isolated, and have clear emergency disconnects.

🔧 Mechanical Safety

  • Sharp Edges: Robots must have no sharp or pointed projections. All edges must be smooth or covered.
  • Propulsion Safety: Propellers and water jet nozzles must be enclosed in protective guards to prevent accidental contact.

🚒 Firefighting System

  • Water Pressure: Water streams must operate at a safe pressure level.
  • Controlled Activation: Systems must be designed to prevent accidental discharge outside the designated arena zone.

Code of Conduct

A positive, respectful, and collaborative environment is essential for a successful competition. All participants are expected to uphold these standards.

🤝 Team Interactions

Respect other teams' space, equipment, and efforts. Sabotage or verbal misconduct is grounds for immediate disqualification. Collaboration is encouraged. Photographing or recording another team's robot during their trial is strictly forbidden.

🧑‍⚖️ Officials & Judging

All communication with judges and staff must be polite. Only designated team spokespersons may approach judges. Arguments are not tolerated. All judges' decisions are final.

📜 Infraction Policy

  • 1st Infraction: A formal verbal warning.
  • 2nd Infraction: A -25 point deduction from the team's score.
  • 3rd Infraction: Immediate disqualification from the round and/or competition.

Awards & Prizes

We recognize excellence in performance, design, and innovation. All teams receive a certificate and medal for their participation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are LEGO and Arduino projects judged by the same criteria?

Yes, all teams are judged equally based on the scoring guidelines for their category, regardless of the platform used.

Can we use the pool's water to extinguish the fire?

Yes, provided your mechanism is eco-friendly and does not contaminate the water.

Are there restrictions on motors?

No, as long as your motor and entire power system comply with the 12V maximum electrical guideline.

Can we cancel after registering?

It is not recommended as fees are non-refundable. For urgent cancellations, please notify organizers at least 3 weeks before the competition.

Can a team have members from different age categories?

Yes, but the majority must be within the registered category. A minority of members (1-2) can be from a younger category, but not an older one.
